When talking with students I often tell them that their words are the most powerful tool they have. We discuss how their words could change someone’s life positively or negatively. Giving students voice isn’t only about opportunity. It’s also about inspiring and empowering them to speak thoughtfully. With practice, encouragement, and assistance, students can share ideas that are insightful and profound.
Children are always watching and looking to us as a guide on how to behave (even when we think they aren’t). As adults we can strive to measure our words when speaking with children, it will make all the difference in how they choose to use their words.
With words well chosen, we can guide, congratulate, encourage, support and comfort. There are several ways we can improve our communication with our children and strengthen our connections with them. Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind when modeling how we should speak with one another in different situations:
We can use positive reinforcement so our children feel recognized for their efforts and successes. When giving praise explicitly state what your child is doing right and thank them. Acknowledging children for their strategic efforts and accomplishments, rather than seeming to always catch them doing wrong, gives them some goals to aim for.
Having a few choice phrases ready can defuse situations when children are dysregulated. When emotions are heightened it’s helpful to sincerely ask, “What do you need from me right now?” Their answers are usually reasonable requests that can be granted, even if only temporarily.
